Sol LeWitt

Lines & Color (1975)

Lines & Color is a prominent example of Sol LeWitt’s mechanic and removed technique. In this book, the artist varies one to two aspects of his pattern per page. The book is split into three sections exploring varying conditions of the line: straight, curved and dotted, which act as framing devices for the colors they seek to illuminate.

In the horizontal lines chapter, the pattern remains consistent while the colors of both the lines and backgrounds change. The significance in the slight and consistent sense of variation among each leaf underscores the relationship among the individual pages that combine to create the whole, the book, rather than the individual patterns isolated.
